Bicycle travel is an important element of multimodal streets. Bicyclists vary in their level of skill and confidence, trip purpose, and preference for facility types. Thus the mobility needs of bicyclists in urban contexts vary as well. Bicyle facilities encompass a system of interconnected routes, paths, and on-street bicycle lanes that provide for safe and efficent bicycle travel. This report focuses only on the provision of bicycle lanes on major thoroughfares. Refer to AASHTO’s Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities for planning and design guidance for all types of bicycle facilities.
