Medians are the center portion of a street that separates opposing directions of travel. Medians vary in width and purpose and can be raised with curbs or painted and flush with the pavement. In context sensitive solutions, medians on low-speed urban thoroughfares are used for access management, accommodation of turning traffic, safety, pedestrian refuge, landscaping, and lighting and utilities. Based on these functions, this guidance addresses raised curbed medians with discussion of alternate applications such as flush medians.
