Refuge islands provide pedestrians and bicyclists a refuge area within intersection and midblock crossings. Refuge islands provide a location for pedestrians or bicyclists to stop part way through their crossing. They also break up crosswalks at complex multi-lane and multi-legged intersections into shorter and easier portions for pedestrians to cross.
