Crosswalks are used to assist pedestrians in crossing streets. The definition provided in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (see sidebar) of an unmarked crosswalk makes it clear that unmarked crosswalks can exist only at intersections, whereas the definition of a marked crosswalk makes it clear that marked crosswalks can exist at intersections “or elsewhere”.
