Multimodal intersections operate with pedestrians, bicycles, cars, buses, trucks, and in some cases trains. In many cases the diverse uses of intersections involve a high level of activity and shared use. Intersections have the unique characteristic of accommodating the almost constant occurrence of conflicts between all modes, and most collisions on major thoroughfares take place at intersections. This characteristic is the basis for most intersection design standards, particularly for safety.
