This chapter outlines a five-stage process for designing thoroughfares in walkable urban contexts where the community has determined that the character of the thoroughfare and its integration with its surroundings are a high priority. It also presents an approach to designing thoroughfares within constrained rights-of-way, and discusses the flexibility the designer has in applying the design parameters presented in this report to urban thoroughfares.
