Myths

  • New Urbanism critic, Randal O'Toole, Senior Economist with the Thoreau Institute, and Stephen Town, architectural liaison officer with the West Yorkshire Police Department, expound on the problems of New Urbanism neighborhoods in Reason Magazine claiming, "planners sacrifice safety in the name of 'openness' and 'accessibility.'"

  • Peter Knowles from Operation Scorpion makes erroneous conclusions about New Urbanism using two British developments that are actually not New Urban developments.

Reality

  • CNU responds to Reason Magazine pointing out the poor connections O'Toole and Town make between design and safety.

  • Robert Steuteville, Editor and Publisher of "New Urban News," highlights the distortions and arguments that New Urbanist developments are crime-friendly.

  • Laurence Aurbach rebuts the Reason Magazine article on a point-by-point basis. O'Toole responds to the rebuttal, to which Aurbach answers.
