Goals for Project: Address freight issues

PROBLEMS/ISSUES

Problems at Neighborhood Level

Charettes often don’t get to freight issues (although these are often addressed by planners in retrospect)
Anchor stores often come with delivery standards
Tendency to design to the vehicle
Freight Rail impact – difficult to get at-grade crossings
Trucking industry increasingly pushing standards that are incompatible with small street design

Problems at Network Level

New Urbanists are failing to address freight at network level
NU needs to acknowledge that there is a need for big roads
Long Distance Freight has a need for bypasses/getting through small towns efficiently

SOLUTIONS

Local Solutions
Look to urban models – two-story anchor stores like NC Lowe’s or Minneapolis Target
Building with materials that can withstand truck weights – if narrow street, need strong curbs, weight-bearing pavement

Network Solutions
Involve Truck Industry (ATA) in ITE publication
Use existing contacts, like TRB committees
Better understand freight needs, freight industry, warehousing industru
Evaluate freight needs individually
Start addressing standards for Big Roads – making better big roads
Choices – think of how NU can offer choices to freight

To-DO
Freight session at CNU Congress – get us educated on freight network needs
Work with TRB to approach Trucking Industry – get their input on ITE document
