Light, light rail
Convener: Dan Burden, 614-595-0976 dburden@aol.com

Participants:

Goals for Project: Find a set of parameters for introducing successful light, light rail

Definition: Light, light rail is a form of transit (typically 6 feet wide), pulled by a tug or other small engine, having carts with slide on and off benches (eliminates need for an isle) that is highly affordable to build, operate and use (less than $1M per mile that works in a dedicated, or semi-exclusive space. Stations are simple, frequencies are high.

Problems/Issues:
Equipment and system solutions
How to interact with pedestrians and bicyclists
How to handle at intersections
Operating costs are the big cost for any transit operation
Affordable costs are based on numbers of users (critical mass)
What is the technological advantage of this type of system versus a bus?
Headways have to be frequent enough to make the system work
Can the driver be a moderate wage driver?

Planning and design features

use either rail, a channel or bike lane arrangement
can be used in a shared corridor with pedestrians and bicyclists
moves at no greater speed than bicycles
quiet, low or no pollution
