Frequently Asked Questions about New Urbanism and the ReVisioning Mississippi Workshop
Is CNU in favor of requiring development to be New Urbanist?
A: Today's regulations overwhelmingly stop New Urbanist development from being built. We are in favor of repealing these anti-choice rules. In some locations, codes mandating good urbanism make sense. They make sense in downtown areas, historic cities, and places where the demand for New Urbanism far exceeds the supply. However, we are not interested in coercing people to live in New Urbanism. We believe it will succeed on market demand.
Does New Urbanism require front porches and neotraditional architecture?
A:The Charter of the New Urbanism declares that "individual architectural projects should be seamlessly linked to their surroundings. This issue transcends style."
Is New Urbanism liberal or conservative?
A: Unfortunately, no school has yet developed a completely New Urbanist curriculum. Many architecture and planning curriculums do not properly prepare students for the complicated task of building cities and towns, and CNU's education task force is investigating ways to change that. The following architecture or planning schools all have several faculty members who are members of CNU. Please note that this list does not constitute an endorsement of any particular university.
