In Ocean Springs the process has been helped along by an extremely enthusiastic and New urbanist friendly leader in the form of mayor Connie Moran.
Andrew Zitofsky, from Dover, Kohl & Partners, focused on the bridge landing and the harbor in Ocean Springs. At the bridge, a new yacht club with possible development around it. A gateway, the only place where tall buildings would fit into Ocean Springs. In the harbor the focus was on the Martin, and Fayard properties. On the first, the original proposal called for development right up to the street on all sides, and was met with opposition from the community. The site development was redesigned around the existing oak grove as a park, with development focused around the high ground at the edge of the property. On the Fayard property there was opportunity for a new waterfront open air market with a restaurant above, and a pier.
They are currently in the process of recalibrating the SmartCode map to overlay the entire map of the city.
Bruce Tolar is working on creating a Katrina Cottage Village on 2 acres of land in the Ocean Springs Railroad district in downtown Ocean Springs.
