Laura Hall, of Fisher & Hall urban design, has visited 3 times.
The population has dropped from 7,000 to just over 1200, reducing it’s tax base by 85% while 75% of the structures were destroyed.
They have built a large Katrina cottage designed by Eric Mozier and labor from the menanites.
Almost all remaining citizens showed up to the charrettes where it was decide that long streetblocks would be broken up by cross streets, and zoning would include density allowed, along with mixed use areas. Density was concentrated in the historic downtown, and near the new Wal-Mart which was being designed along with the Wal-Mart architect, who attended the CNU XIV, as a mixed use building and walkable shopping district, to replace the old sprawl style Wal-Mart.
July 6th
The Pass Christian Planning Commission concluded their SmartCode
workshops but are now reviewing the Comp Plan, which ended up having
to be updated to make it consistent with their SmartCode. They are
reviewing the Comp Plan now before making a final recommendation on the
SmartCode. It will probably take another 4-6 weeks of public hearings
at the Planning Commission level before the SmartCode makes it to the
Board of Aldermen.
By the way, during the Planning Commission SmartCode workshops, the
Commissioners created a Special District for auto-oriented condos in
part of the town, which has enraged community members who are very
well-organized. So, that battle wages on...
