Overview
USGBC has effectively established LEED brand & infrastructure via LEED-NC, such that many other important stakeholder organizations agree that it is invaluable and want to collaborate with USGBC on LEED-ND. In addition to the LEED-ND Partners (CNU and NRDC), these include Smart Growth America, the Growth Management Leadership Alliance, the Urban Land Institute, and the American Planning Association.
There is currently no national certification system for Smart Growth, but there are some other market transformation initiatives. These include some local smart growth endorsement programs, but very few local certification systems. Groups like 1000 Friends of Oregon and New Jersey, who form the Growth Management Leadership Alliance, are some of the primary regional agents for promoting Smart Growth, and they have a great diversity of approaches and tactics among them. There are also related educational materials are coming from a number of sources, including CNU’s SmartCode seminars, and publications from the American Planning Association, Smart Growth America, the Urban Land Institute, and many more.
The number of nonmembers who are interested is a potential source of growth for USGBC membership, chapters, and workshop participants. We have also had a high number of inquiries from parties who are interested in getting a project into the LEED-ND pilot program when it begins.
Projected Impacts on Workshops, Exam, Reference Guide Sales
Because the rating system is still being developed, no support materials, workshops, or accreditation exam materials have been developed yet. We project that workshops and possibly an accreditation exam track will be developed in 2007, but the details will need to be discussed with CNU and NRDC as well.
Staff & Contractors
Jennifer Henry, LEED-ND Program Manager, works fulltime on LEED-ND. Peter Templeton, Director of LEED and International Programs and Dara Zycherman, LEED Program Assistant both spend part of their time on LEED-ND.
We currently have a contract with one consultant (Design, Community, and Environment) hired to produce a report on the public health impacts of neighborhood design characteristics, in order to better inform the LEED-ND Core Committee’s deliberations on this topic. We anticipate hiring other consultants in 2005 to help with refining metrics, managing pilots, developing support materials, and developing a delivery model.
